Mama Tried will count down the New Year in downtown Lancaster

Everything old will be new again this New Year’s Eve in Lancaster.

The year-end bash formerly known as Countdown Lancaster is now known as 3…2…1! Lancaster, and a group of guys who’ve been in the local music scene for years have come together to form a new band, Mama Tried, which will be ringing in the New Year downtown.

Mama Tried will join a host of comedians, magicians, singers and even a fortuneteller Friday, Jan. 31, as part of the city’s New Year’s extravaganza.

The main venues this season will be Lancaster Family YMCA, 265 Harrisburg Pike, and Clipper Magazine Stadium, 650 N. Prince St. Both will host ticketed events from 5 to 8:45 p.m. Early fireworks will be held at the stadium at the 9 p.m.

Mama Tried will take to the stage at 10 p.m. at Binns Park in the 100 block of North Queen Street for the free ring-in-the-New-Year portion of the event. When the clock strikes midnight, the red rose will descend and a second, bigger fireworks display will be shot off.

“Big” is the operative word for this event. Mama Tried promises a bigger sound than would seem possible from its four members: Dorden Bivings (keyboard, lead vocal), Brian O’Leary (guitars, vocals), Tom Mowery (drums, vocals) and Bobby Lawson (bass, vocals).

Together, the members of Mama Tried, which came together about a year ago, have built a following playing something for everybody.

“We do everything we can,” musically, Lawson said in a recent phone interview.

“We can knock out a Prince song or a Stevie Wonder song, and then turn around to do a Tim McGraw song.”

It doesn’t stop there. A Mama Tried set might include “Mustang Sally” (made famous by Wilson Pickett) next to Led Zeppelin’s “Houses of the Holy” next to “Sara Smile” by Hall & Oates next to Toto’s “Africa” next to … well, you get the picture.

It’s not the kind of band you can pigeonhole.

Fans of country singer Merle Haggard might also recognize the band’s name, a nod to the title of Haggard’s classic 1968 hit. The association wasn’t really intentional; it just sort of came up when the guys were tossing names around, and everyone liked it.

New to the band for New Year’s Eve: a horn section.

“We’re still rockin’ it out,” Lawson said.
